Checking the clear sky sites and the forceast, it appears that we have a good chance of having decent skies for our scheduled public night at our Curby dark sky site (aka James G. Baker center for Astronomy) tomorrow, Saturday, June 16, 2018. As such, I am giving a go for the event. I believe I saw one of the email notices list the event as starting at 6:00 P.M. Not sure why it was listed as starting that early, but if you want to come at that time, we can set up a solar scope for people to peer through. Normally, it would start at 8:00 with a presentation inside the Multipurpose building, followed by observing on the field and in the observatory. Observation starts just after sunset.

The event is open to the public, but is also a good opportunity for new members to see their dark sky site and view through the observatory telescopes, to set up telescopes in the observing field, or to bring your telescope and ask our experienced members questions you may have about your equipment, or observing in general.

Members, we can use a few scopes in the field for this event.

    See you there.

Looking at the weather situation for tomorrow, it doesn't look good at all for our scheduled member night at Curby (aka, James G. Baker Center for Astronomy). Although the forecast for storms is ony 30%, it is also for mostly cloudy, with high and medium clouds being the culprits.  As such, member night has been cancelled.

Public night at our Curby dark site is a go. According to clear sky charts, there is a window of clearing to clear skies at about 10:00, which is when it gets dark enough to see the stars anyway. All are invited to come out and see what Curby is all about. starts at 8:00 P.M. See you there.

Due to forecast weather conditions, Saturday is definitely a no go for the scheduled member night at Curby. Looks like an 80% chance of rain. I mentioned that we could move the scheduled member night to Friday, but alas, it appears that it will be cloudy that night. If you want to try Friday night, go for it. But it doesn't look promising. I know it is a work day, but Thursday night looks to be good enough for some decent viewing. I will be there giving imaging lessons to one of our members so if you want to join us on Thursday night, our members are welcome to do so.

Tomorrow night (April 7, 2018) looks to be a clear night at Curby. If any LAS member is interested, I plan to open up the observatory for observing. The observing fields are still a soaking mess, so if you want to observe there with your own scope, I ask that you temporarily park your car on the gravel road until you have unloaded your equipment onto the field, then back it up and park it in the gravel lot in front of the multipurpose buillding. I highly recommend that you use a tarp, particularly if you value your equipment staying clean.

I will be there at about 6:00. Come whenever you want.

This is an impromptu event, not a scheduled one.

The weather forecast for Saturday into Saturday night calls for 80-100% chance of rain. I don't see that forecast changing. As such, public night at Curby for this weekend, Saturday, March 24, is cancelled.

    Update:

Yesterday, I postponed until tomorrow today's Member night at Curby.  Unfortunately, it appears, according to all of my weather and clear sky sources that although it looks to be mostly sunny much of the day tomorrow, the clouds will roll in in earnest right about the time the sky gets dark enough to do any observing.  As that will be around 9:00-9:30 PM, and on a Sunday, I suspect most members won't want to risk it.  As such, member night for tomorrow night is cancelled.  As always, if you feel the need to take the risk, you are welcome to go to the site as long as you understand that the ground has yet to dry out from all the rain we've had these past few weeks, and so the observing field is soggy.  So please upload your equipment onto the field with your vehicle sitting on the gravel drive, and then park it on the gravel parking area in front of the multipurpose building.

Looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow evening for Curby, and it doesn't look good. Calling for rain tomorrow with mostly cloudy tomorrow night. As such, I am calling a no go for member night Saturday at Curby. Having said that, there may be a chance for members to observe on Sunday evening if you folks want to journey there. I will call a go, no go for Sunday on Saturday evening.  Stay tuned to this bat channel.
