Due to incliment weather (cloudy skies, below freezing temperatures, and very breezy winds) tomorrow's member night at Curby has been cancelled.

I hate to be the bearer of grim astronomical news, but after pleading with the weather gods to no avail, I must regretfully announce that member night at Curby for Satuday, November 3, 2018 has been canceled.

Tomorrow night's forecast looks acceptable to good. As such, Public Night at our dark sky site, at Curby, Indiana for Septembr 15, 2018 is a go.

  • Fri, September 07, 2018 12:25 PM | Ron Yates

Given the awful weather forecast for this weekend (80-90% chance or rain all day tomorrow into the evening, into Sunday), I am calling a no go for member night at Curby tomorrow, September 8, 2018.

CONNECT is a GO. I just got back from there, checked our setup area and it is grassy, dry and firm. See you there

Here is an update on Curby events for this weekend.

Sky conditions will not be ideal for meteor shower viewing on Public night, Friday, August 10. But not bad enough to warrant cancelling the event. Please note that the Perseid meteor shower is a late night event, meaning it will be best seen after midnight. And after midnight, Early Saturday conditions look to improve. As such, Public night is still a go, but keep in mind that our software for controlling cloud cover is still in beta.

Member night on Saturday, August 11 is a go. Members who plan to attend the dinner at 6:30 PM, please RSVP to Ken Alderson asap. Finally, if anyone is interested in coming out on Sunday night, August 12, for the peak of the shower, the observatory will be open.

Due to forecast 50% chance of storms and cloudy skies tomorrow evening, Public night at Curby has been cancelled.

  • Fri, July 06, 2018 5:15 PM | Ron Yates

Just a reminder that tomorrow is LAS member night at Curby. The weather forecast looks fantastic.  Be there or be square

Checking the clear sky sites and the forceast, it appears that we have a good chance of having decent skies for our scheduled public night at our Curby dark sky site (aka James G. Baker center for Astronomy) tomorrow, Saturday, June 16, 2018. As such, I am giving a go for the event. I believe I saw one of the email notices list the event as starting at 6:00 P.M. Not sure why it was listed as starting that early, but if you want to come at that time, we can set up a solar scope for people to peer through. Normally, it would start at 8:00 with a presentation inside the Multipurpose building, followed by observing on the field and in the observatory. Observation starts just after sunset.

The event is open to the public, but is also a good opportunity for new members to see their dark sky site and view through the observatory telescopes, to set up telescopes in the observing field, or to bring your telescope and ask our experienced members questions you may have about your equipment, or observing in general.

Members, we can use a few scopes in the field for this event.

    See you there.

Looking at the weather situation for tomorrow, it doesn't look good at all for our scheduled member night at Curby (aka, James G. Baker Center for Astronomy). Although the forecast for storms is ony 30%, it is also for mostly cloudy, with high and medium clouds being the culprits.  As such, member night has been cancelled.
